An Amusement park is fun because you enjoy yourself and have a good time there.

A comedian is funny because he will tell you jokes and make you laugh.

4. Intelligent v Intellectual

Tom is a very intelligent boy. (clever)

湯姆非常聰明。

Tom has the intellectual capacity of a seventeen-year-old. (ability to think in an intelligent way)

湯姆的智力相當于17歲的少年。(指聰明地思考問題的能力)

5. Immigrant v Emigrant

At the beginning of the 19th century, the United States welcomed thousands of immigrants into the country. (people who arrive in a new country to live there permanently)

十九世紀初，美國非常歡迎外來移民。（從別國移居本國的移民）

There are more emigrants than immigrants in this country. (people who leave their  country permanently)

這個國家移居國外的人比移進國內的人多（從本國移往他國的居民）

6. Lose (動詞) v Loose (形容詞)

I am always losing my car keys.

我經常丟車鑰匙。

I have lost a lot of weight. This skirt is really loose.

我減肥之后裙子都松了。

7. Advice (名詞) v Advise (動詞)

Let me give you some advice.

讓我給你點建議。

I advise you not to do that.

我建議你不要那樣做。

8. Briefly v Shortly

The chairman spoke briefly at the beginning of the conference. (for a short time)

會議開始時主席發表了簡短講話。（強調持續時間短）

Good Morning. The chairman will open the conference shortly. (in a few minutes)

早上好。主席馬上就開始會議。（強調幾分鐘之內）

9. Principal (名詞/形容詞) v Principle (名詞)

The School Principal has given the pupils permission to go out today.

校長允許學生們今天外出。

Our company has very high principles.

我們公司奉行高標準。

The principal issue we have here is that this project will not finish on time.

我們現在面臨的主要問題是工程不能按時完成了。

10. Lie v Lay (現在時)

I was so tired that I had to lie down for 30 minutes. (No direct object)

我太累了，必須躺下休息30分鐘。（無直接賓語）

The baby is tired so I shall lay her down for her nap. (Direct Object = baby)

小嬰兒累了，我要把他放下來，讓他睡一會。（直接賓語是“小嬰兒”）
